What is nanotechnology?
The term “nanotechnology” is derived from the
Greek work “nanos”, meaning “dwarf”.
Scientists use the prefix “nano” to denote one
billionth part of an SI unit – for example, there are
a billion nanoseconds in one second, and a billion nanometres
in a metre.
It is common nowadays to talk of nanotechnology when dealing
with components whose size is measured in nanometres, especially
in the context of material sciences. Nanotechnology typically
involves very thin functional layers, microscopic components
or modifications to material that can be measured in nanometres,
as is the case with the innovative surface of Nanotech-treated
